Headwarmer highlights below some Choice Cuts that we think are timeless, a million times better than the regurgitations of the modern day scene and well worth tracking down. It's a list that will grow and grow so stay tuned.
'100%' - Sonic Youth
A perfect piece of classic early garage rock from the Youth that still sounds superb and demonstrates just exactly what todays crop of miscreants should be aiming for.
'Taste the Pain' - Red Hot Chili Peppers
A real early slice of Chili's funk, it's still one of our favourite tracks and probably one of their best from this era.
'Twentieth Century' - Brad
From one of the best side projects to come out of Seattle, Brad's 'Shame' was elequant, tender and superb. This track demonstrates it's engaging qualities superbly.
'High Head Blues' - The Black Crowes
To lighten the mood here's a slice of southern fried inspiration from the Crowes that resides on the excellent 'Amorica' opus. Immediate and memorable, what's not to like.
'Feed Me' - Barkmarket
From this sadly defunct, New York based genre defying rock group's swansong, 'Feed Me' is a distended, dark and wonderfully grimey piece of experimental power that is harsh, heavy and completely captivating.
'Nothing' - Stabbing Westward
From Chicago spawned quintet Stabbing Westward, this killer cut will make you think again about the ultimate sound in early 90's industrial metal. Comprising a mechanico-tribal rythmn sectiona and a psycho killer vocal, this is heavily embellished but completely irresistable.
'Smoke The Sky' - Motley Crue
How good is this; from the Crue in their '94 comeback with ex Scream vocalist John Corabi. Probably the heaviest track they ever penned and we love it.
'LA Song' - Deconstruction
This was life after Ritual era Jane's Addiction for Dave Navarro and Eric Avery. The little known Deconstruction who only released one album which was, patchy; yet superb in parts. This is one of those parts.
'Sex Type Thing' - Stone Temple Pilots
STP were really, really good once. Their debut is actually tremendous and at least the equal of all the other grunge successes from the 90's. Overlooked and under played, it's great to hear this one again.
'Black Steel' - Tricky
Remember Maxinquaye; that devilishly different and diverse trip hop monster of an album? Well this is just a slice from what is still one of the most innovative artists of our time. Noone and we mean noone, sounds like Tricky.
'Ricochet' - Faith No More
One of strongest tracks from 'King For A Day...' this is theatrical, emotionally charged and intense; everything that was great about FNM.
'One Inch Man' - Kyuss
Alongside '..Sky Valley', '...And The Circus Leaves Town' is essential, and still better than most Queens LPs.
'We Die Young' - Alice In Chains
From Facelift; which is not a patch on Dirt, but this is a pretty special track and it needs to be played LOUD!
'Suckerpunch' - The Wildhearts
Fast, furious, still relevant and fresh as the day it was born; there's not a lot around today that sounds like this.
'Clean My Wounds' - Corrosion of Conformity
From the superb Deliverance this is one of their most accessible tracks; grimey, low slung and catchy as hell.
'All in the Mind' - Verve
This was the bands first single, released in 1992. Never assigned to an album but preceeded the superb and unrecognised 'A Storm in Heaven'. This is transcending and tremendous; everything their comeback is not.
'Wish' - Nine Inch Nails
From the extraordinary Broken EP and probably one of their finest tracks.
'Send Me Your Money' - Suicidal Tendencies
Heavy, funky, funny and still fresh after all these years
'Esse Quam Videri' - Mordred
From In This Life, you've got to love this danceable winner. Three minutes of funk, solos and the best rap we've heard in years.
'Tommy the Cat' - Primus
Taken from '..the Seas of Cheese', this is quality and totally unique.
'5 Minutes Alone' - Pantera
The best track from Far Beyond Driven and a cracking video.
'The Overly Dramatic Truth' - El-P
Taken from hip-hops Downward Spiral, this is white rap at its best. Engaging, melodic, heavy and memorable
'Debonair' - The Afghan Whigs
From probably their best LP Gentlemen back in the early '90s, this was the first single and still, a superb piece of alternative songwriting.
'Jesus Christ Pose' - Soundgarden
Having recently announced their comeback, this is what they have to live up to. Please don't destroy such a legacy.
'Punk It Up' - Infectious Grooves
Taken from the Suicidal, Jane's Addiction side project debut; this is just funky. We like funky; plus it's features Stephen Perkins on drums and Rob Trujillio on bass.
'Anywhere But Here' - Raging Slab
Bit of an unknown this one, but all the better for it. Taken from their Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert, a vital 'slab'..ahem... of southern fried rock.
'I Am One' - Smashing Pumpkins
From the seminal debut, this was the Pumpkins at their most indie and alternative. We'd forgotten how good this is.
'Mall Monarchy' - Compulsion
Taken from Comforter, this was punk rock with angst (and a bad video). Quality nonetheless.
'Save Me' - The Tea Party
This guy could be the ghost of Jim Morrison. A slow and brooding piece of canadian rock from the '90s that if given the chance, will have you diving for that repeat button.
'Alec Eiffel' - Pixies
From Trompe le Monde, one of many tracks that help remind you how great they really were.
'Four Walled World' - Temple of the Dog
Like on Jesus Christ Pose, this was Cornell at his resplendent best. From one of the seminal side projects to come out of Seattle, this is one of our favourites.
'Touch Me I'm Sick' - Mudhoney
From Superfuzz Bigmuff this is raw garage rock that launched a scene and a generation. Still immense and highly enjoyable.
'From Out of Nowhere' - Faith No More
Taken from The Real Thing, what can you say about FNM that hasn't already been said a million times.
