Attempting to embrace just
about every musical genre into one workable function is a risky strategy; one
that can make or break even the most determined of innovators. The debut album from LA rock-technologists
Shiny Toy Guns is at times an impressive mix of classic song writing and
enveloping, inviting soundscapes created by a hybrid breed of Fischerspooner, New
Order and The Killers.Occasionally however
it borders on a badly wired, sonically doomed space ship that struggles to
regain the early promise of ‘You are the One’ and ‘Le Disko’.It’s easy for this album to race by before
you even notice the uncomfortable ‘Waiting’, or the Kraftwork massacre of
‘Jackie Will Save Me’; but your mind will subconsciously catch ‘Rainy Monday’
and the velvety emotional drive of ‘Shaken’. While there’s not an iota of original thought
here, ‘Chemistry of a Car Crash’ and the title track breeze along
unpretentiously, content in the knowledge that Chad Petree’s guitar, Jeremy
Dawson’s synth and Carah Faye’s vocal are more than capable of adding some
quality.‘We Are Pilots’ is a
non-too-displeasing effort for those who like their danceable future rock
packaged with nice fluffy edges.
