STINKER!

Warty old timers Meat Puppets began plying their murky, low-slung trade back in 1980 and have since released some intriguing works of invention over style; possibly peaking commercially on 94’s ‘Too High to Die’ and creatively on 02’s ‘Up On the Sun’.  Expectation therefore has been luke warm for this, their 19th collection in all of unique, psychedelic punk oddities that come album closer ‘Light the Fire’, make like brewers droop.  After the opening curiosity and interest of ‘Fly like the Wind’ and ‘Radio Moth’, the album slips into a monotonous tone and drone with no sign of an escape act.  There’s a frustration here that the brothers Kirkwood – supported by Ted Marcus on drums - are not taking advantage of a deeply hidden talent that has only occasionally seen the light of day.  Instead they continue to drop tunes of drooling drudgery and spazzed out noise that’s cheap, scruffy, lo-fi…almost an Oxfam shop set to music.
